Hi Pipa,

I'm so sorry that I never got to know Honey, although I have gone over to leave some slobbers on her blog.
She looked like such a special girl.

Hi Pipa,

Thanks for your comment! Yes, it does sound like you're going through 'canine adolescence'!! Tell you humans not to worry - you will get through it! As long as they remain very consistent and firm with you (Are you listening, John?!) - they don't have to be nasty but they mustn't give in either - then you will come through OK and you will remember all your training and become a nice, well-behaved dog again. This is just a time when you are testing your boundaries and seeing what you can get away with...so they must remain the pack leaders otherwise they will lose your respect and it will be very hard to get it back!!

It sounds like they are giving you lots of great walks...but maybe you need to do a bit more training? Not necessarily boring stuff - trick training is fine too or learning to retrieve things by name or whatever...just something to stimulate your mind. Because if they just give you physical exercise, you will just build more and more stamina and they will never be able to use up all your energy but if they stimulate your brain too, then you will be mentally tired and this will make you less hyper (and destructive!) They say 10mins of training is worth 40mins of exercise!!

So maybe they can do 5mins with you before you start your walks, 5mins during your walks and 5mins at the end. It doesnt have to be boring stuff - can be fun, like games. eg. putting you in a Down Stay and then running around, waving their arms and shouting or jumping over you - or going out of sight - whatever, just to make it like a challenge for you to remain staying down so you have to work hard to concentrate and this makes you tired. Or getting you to Sit straight from walking. Or trying to get you to drop into a Down when you are running towards them. Just be creative! It doesn't matter if you don't do these things perfectly in the beginning - the important thing is that you are working towards things together.

Also, if they have time, maybe they can take you to join in a dog sport or activity nearby? Even just once a week Agility or Tracking or Obedience or whatever would be really good - it would channel some of your energy into useful areas and also teach you to focus on them in different situations. Again, it doesn't matter if you don't do well in the beginning - the important thing is the experience. Most dogs love to do some activity - to "work" - and especially when they are young with lots of energy, just the daily walk may not be enough for them.

Finally, have they tried making you work for your food? Rather than just giving it to you in your bowl, maybe they can scatter it around the garden for you before they leave for work and then you have to sniff out and find the bits to eat - so you will be tired by the time you have finally eaten everything and then will sleep during the day! (using your nose is very tiring) Also, they can try putting your food (if you're eating dry kibble) in a treat ball (you can buy this in a pet store) which has many holes and little bits of food drop out as you roll it around. Again, it occupies and entertains you and makes you "work" for your food (as you would in the wild) so that in between, you will sleep.

Anyway, these are just some suggestions - hope they are helpful!

Honey the Great Dane

HI Pipa,

Just wondering how you are? Haven't had news from you in a while - hope you are OK!

Also - did your human get the email from my human about the Gentle Leader/Halti and other stuff? Just thought they might help a bit with your walking! :-)
