Thank you Pipa! You are a great pal, and so sweet to mention me in your site!
Mom just took me to swim a bit. I sat in the water, and it felt so cool on my fur.
Hope to visit you again soon!

Oh no - that is awful about Golden Honey!! I have popped over to leave some slobbers for her. Hope she feels a bit better after her new medicine...

About the bones - poor you, Pipa!! ow awful to get pancreatitis!

First of all, it is actually a bad idea to cook bones - it makes them very hard and brittle and crack easily, so they can splinter and get stuck in your throat or your bowels. So if your human wants to give you "real bones" - ask them not to cook it - have them raw.

Secondly, it is very common for dogs that are on commercial dog food to get diarrhoea when they eat raw bones because their stomachs and digestive systems cannot cope with both at the same time. Some dogs can manage but many get tummy troubles.

(This is why many people who try to feed raw fail - because they try a few raw things in the beginning, mixed with the conventional dry food and then the dog gets an upset tummy...The advice for people switching to raw is to stop the old food completely and try to fast (no food) for 1 day to clear the system and then start completely with only raw food. It is not a good idea to mix the 2 types).

But anyway, you don't have to eat a raw diet - that's fine - and so if you're on dry food, maybe it is too hard for your stomach to try raw bones as well. So perhaps it is better for you to stick with the bones sold in pet shops - these have usually been slowly baked for a long time. They will still help to clean your teeth! :-)

If you DO want to try raw bones, then perhaps you can ask the butcher (or your human) to cut off as much fat as possible. Or you can ask the butcher to cut out the middle section of a marrow bone for you (usually, the 2 ends have fat and cartilage stuck to them but the middle is usually clean).

Beware, though, that marrow bones have lots of delicious marrow in the middle which us dogs love but this is very rich and so can also give you diarrhoea! Maybe this is another reason you got diarrhoea? It is not bad for you but just very rich (like goose liver pate!) and so you can't have too much in one time.

Anyway, don't be afraid to try raw bones again - many dogs are on dry food but can also chew on raw bones - but don't worry if you can't have them either. I think as long as you are chewing something hard regularly, that is keeping your teeth clean and that is fine!

Good luck!

Honey the Great Dane
